Frequently Asked Questions

When is it?

August 5-7. It begins in the late afternoon on Friday, August 5 and ends in the evening of Sunday, August 7.

We will have optional (but highly recommended) workshop recordings released on Monday, August 1. The workshops will delve deeper into the issues at hand and will better prepare your team for success.

The weekend is reserved for each group to work together and meet with their mentors in 30 minute intervals.

Where will the hackathon take place?

On Zoom! The hackathon is completely virtual, so you can participate from anywhere as long as you have a laptop and wifi.

Who can participate?

All undergraduates who live or attend school in Texas are eligible to participate!

How do I register?

You can sign up to be on our emailing list for more details as the event approaches. To apply, click here! We are accepting applications on a rolling basis, so the earlier you apply, the more likely you are to be selected as a participant.

Disclaimer: This application is very casual and shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes.

Do I need a full team to apply?

Nope! You can apply as a full team, part of a team, or as an individual. However, each team member must submit their own application, and there is a section where you can designate with whom you are applying.

If you do not have a full team, we will assign you to a team (3-4 individuals) based on your interests.

When do I need to be available?

You should be available the weekend of August 5-7. It is up to you and your team how much time you devote to researching the key issues and writing your policy. The event officially begins in the afternoon on Friday and officially ends on Sunday evening.

What happens after the hackathon?

We will compile all policy memos into a larger file that will be shared with Harris Health. These policy memos are meant to start the conversation about finding more efficient solutions to mitigating health disparities.

However, if your team wins, you will have the chance to pursue a semester-long population health policy internship at Harris Health with a $5,000 stipend split between each winning team. For winners, this event will be a longer-term commitment.

Regardless of whether you win or not, you will have access to our network of mentors for further guidance related to your career and any personal pursuits you would like to discuss.

Email hackhealth@rice.edu if you have any other questions or concerns.
